Taxes / 1099R Forms

Income Taxes

Your monthly benefit is reported to the IRS as income, and you are responsible for paying any taxes. You will receive a Form 1099-R annually for tax reporting purposes.
You will complete an Income Tax Withholding form when you apply for retirement to indicate how much federal income tax you want withheld based on your tax situation.
Important Tax Disclaimer: WRS cannot provide tax advice or guidance on how to complete tax withholding forms. We recommend consulting a qualified tax professional for any specific questions regarding your taxes or for assistance with tax-related forms.

IRS Forms 1099-R

Your earnings statements and 1099-R tax forms are sent directly to you from Northern Trust annually. Hard copy 1099-R forms will be mailed to you no later than January 31 each calendar year. Retirees who haven’t received their official tax documents by the middle of February each year should contact WRS to request a duplicate copy.

To ensure timely receipt of your form by mail, please keep your address current. You can update your address or view your 1099-R forms online in late January by logging into your Online Pension Account at pension.wyo.gov. For account-specific assistance, you may also contact the Retiree Services Team at (307) 777-1988.

Why you may receive more than one 1099-R

While most members receive just one 1099-R, you might receive multiple forms for the following reasons:

  • Multiple Accounts: You may receive more than one 1099-R if you have more than one pension account. This also applies if you receive separate distributions from a 457(b) Plan.
  • Age Milestone: You turned 59½ during the year, which requires different tax codes for payments made before and after that date.
  • Different Plans: You are receiving benefits from two different retirement plans (for example, both a public employee and a law enforcement plan).
  • Dual Status: You receive your own retirement benefit and also receive a benefit as a survivor beneficiary.
  • Refunds: You received multiple refunds that have different tax treatments, such as a partial cash payment and a partial rollover to another plan.
