About Our Agency
Mission Statement
The Wyoming Retirement System’s mission is to provide expert administration and responsible investment of Wyoming’s public retirement and supplement savings programs.
WRS administers eight distinct pension plans along with a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, ensuring comprehensive coverage and tailored options to suit your needs.

How Your Pension Works
Your pension benefit is funded through a combination of your employer’s contributions on your behalf and your own contributions, as mandated by state statute. In some instances, employers may cover a portion of your contributions as part of your compensation package. You can review this information on your pay stub or consult with your employer for clarification.
The size of your future retirement benefit hinges on various factors, including your years of service with WRS employers, your average salary, and your age at retirement. While specifics may differ across the eight WRS pension plans, the underlying principle remains consistent.
In many cases, if you change jobs, you can continue to build your pension benefit with any of the 700+ participating public employers in Wyoming!
Pension Plan Advantages: Because your pension is professionally invested, you don’t have to make complex investment decisions. Once you meet the age and service requirements to qualify for a benefit, your pension will last for your lifetime, no matter how long you live. This means you don’t have to worry about running out of money in retirement!

Wyoming Retirement System Board
The WRS Board of Trustees is responsible for managing WRS’ assets and liabilities to keep the retirement plans financially sound and board members are required by law to act in the best financial interest of members.
Investments
WRS invests for the long-term. By pooling approximately $8 billion in assets and pre-funding benefits through member and employer contributions, WRS’ pension plans pay about 70% of benefits from investment earnings.

Funding Status
The WRS Board closely monitors funding status and has a valuation report done every year. The funding ratio is an important measure of a plan’s health, but equally important is the direction in which the plan is heading. WRS’ largest plan, the Public Employee Pension Plan, is nearly 80% funded.
Our Vision
The Wyoming Retirement System’s mission is to provide expert administration and responsible investment of Wyoming’s public retirement and supplement savings programs.
