About Wyoming Retirement System

The Wyoming Retirement System administers retirement plans for most public employees in Wyoming. Over 700 public employers in Wyoming participate in the plan, including public school districts, state government, cities, counties, and more. There are currently over 42,000 actively employed members, and over 26,000 retired members. WRS administers 8 different defined benefit pension plans, with pooled investment assets of about $7.5 billion, as well as a supplemental deferred compensation plan.

Through WRS, the state’s public employers can offer cost-effective retirement benefits that attract and retain highly qualified professionals. WRS has been a partner in building financial security for members and their families since 1953, when the Wyoming Teachers Retirement System (est 1943) and the State Employees Retirement Association (est 1949) merged.

WRS is administered by an 11-member board, which hires an executive director to oversee a staff of about 40 employees.
